A Day to Recharge

In my last post I suggested breaking free of all of our digital communication and work tools and simply taking a brake to breathe, think, and recharge our minds and spirits. If you’ve tried it, you know what I’m talking about. It feels liberating and rejuvenating.

Now, can you imagine feeling that for an entire day? It sounds difficult, nearly impossible, and utterly unrealistic. Well, it’s not. Actually, people have been doing just that for thousands of years. It’s called the Sabbath. Most major religions have a Sabbath day on which you refrain from going about your normal work routine and instead, focus solely on spirituality and personal and family relationships. Judaism prohibits the use of all electronic devices on the Sabbath. Yes, that includes phones, computers, Ipods, Blackberrys, and any other hitech gadget you feel you can’t live without.

The Sabbath gives us the opportunity to break away from the gadgets that bind us and voraciously suck our energy leaving us physically and mentally drained, and recharge and rejuvenate. Instead of looking at digital screens and listening to distant voices, we can focus on seeing the beauty of nature and listening to the voices of our loved ones standing right before us.

The Sabbath is a gift, a weekly opportunity to be reborn. Give it a try.

Just Do Nothing

I recently found myself sitting in a JFK departure gate, waiting for a flight with hundreds of other travelers. Everyone had a cellphone, laptop, or other electronic device, which they were diligently reading, speaking into, or typing on. No one had a moment to spare. Every free space had to be filled. I almost took out my laptop, but I stopped myself. I needed a break from the bombardment of hitech digital communication and stimulation. I need space, empty space, to think, to recharge, to just be. I sat in that airport lobby, among the army of overstimulated modern day, information overdosed, warriors, and took a deep breath and exhaled. Then I took another deep breath, and slowly let the air out, and with it, the stress and tension that had accumulated over the previous hours. Instead of recharging my iphone or macbook, I recharged my spirit, balanced my emotions, and r-e-l-a-x-e-d.

You should try doing nothing sometimes. It might be difficult at first, even for just 2 minutes, but once you get used to it, you will feel a lot calmer and peaceful. Bet of all, you will re-energize and capable of accomplishing much more than you would have if you just kept on going without a break.
